Tree Well Shelter
This shelter is a natural hole that forms when snow accumulates around the base of a tree but not under its lowest branches or by the trunk. Dig a small entrance and climb down into the tree well.
Break off branches from the opposite side of the tree or other trees to insulate the floor of your shelter, and bring in extra to cover yourself with if it is dry. Make sure that you leave a branch sticking out of your shelter entrance to dig yourself out if snow covers the entrance, and also to be able to poke out a ventilation hole. Although it might be tempting to cover every air hole to keep the heat in, you need a place where fresh oxygen can get in so you can breathe.

Find Water Outdoors
Observe animal tracks. Most animals need water to survive as much as we do, and over the course of days, many will make their way to the closest water source to drink. It might take a moment to figure out which direction to travel, but following the arrow pattern of animal tracks will give you a good indication as soon as a fork in the road is discovered.

Natural Water Filter
In an open-ended container, place alternating layers of pebbles, sand, grass, and charcoal. The filter works best when the container tapers to a smaller end. Passing the water through the pebbles, sand, and grass will remove the sediment from the water, and the charcoal should kill any bacteria.
The container can be created with bamboo or flexible strips of bark or old plastic water bottles, if you can find any.

Start a Fire: Strap Drill
This method requires only two additional pieces of equipment from the hand drill, but it is a two-person method. So if you are alone, it’s not the method for you.

Prepping a Fish to Cook
Properly cleaning a fish is essential for preparing it for cooking and can make a big difference in the taste and quality of your meal. Be aware that some fish have sharp spines or spikes along their fins and avoid getting cut on these.

Finding Where You Are
Find your starting point. Identify your location on the map, and place your compass on the map with the edge of the baseplate lined up with your location.
