How much hardness can the descaler media treat?

Our descaler media can handle up to 75 GPG (grains per gallon) or 1,280 PPM (parts per million) of hardness at 4 GPM (gallons per minute).

Will this filter reduce TDS?

Many users may confuse the TDS meter as an effective way to test the performance of water treatment devices such as carbon filters, but that is not its intended purpose. A TDS meter is meant to measure the performance of very aggressive forms of filtration such as reverse osmosis and deionization. So yes, it is true that this filter will not dramatically lower TDS (total dissolved solids), but that is not its primary intended purpose, nor is it the primary purpose of any inline filter of this type. Where an RO membrane physically filters water down to 0.0001 micron, reducing practically all organic and inorganic particles present in water via mechanical filtration and thus yielding a very low “total dissolved solids” reading, a carbon filter filters out chlorine and other unwanted chemical contaminants through a process called adsorption. As such, a carbon filter’s performance cannot be measured by a TDS meter because the impurities being removed are not dissolved solids, but chemical contaminants and volatile organic compounds. It is also worth noting that most TDS is not harmful and includes healthy minerals such as calcium and potassium, and the removal of TDS is generally neither necessary, nor desirable from most water supplies in the United States, including most campgrounds.

Will this RV filter reduce water hardness in ppm?

No, the descaler media used in this filter is not the same as a water softener, and does not actually remove the minerals responsible for hard water, calcium and magnesium, from the water. Instead, the anti-scale technology works to transform the minerals into harmless, non-soluble micro-crystals that cannot stick to surfaces. As a result, you get the prevention of annoying and unsightly scale deposits on your plumbing fixtures, appliances, and in plumbing pipes, but without the need for electricity, messy salts, and harmful wastewater that comes with a traditional sodium water softener.
