In Hiking and Backpacking: For Those Getting Up In Years, author John “Trigger” Dupras reaches into his long-distance backpacking experiences to dive into the hiking and backpacking book arena. His debut nonfiction book puts a spin on hiking and backpacking targeted to the older hiker. Trigger thru-hiked the 2,192 mile long Appalachian Trail in 2019 at age 64, and he draws on his expertise gained from his seven-month adventure with a goal to entice the reader to get outside their comfort zone. He explores the planning and preparation of a hike, be it a day hike, a short weekend trip, or a long-distance adventure, with tips about training and readiness for an outdoor trek. Trigger tackles gear and equipment, safety, fears and concerns, and other challenges for consideration by the older hiker. He highlights, with a bit of humor, his Dumbass Dupras moments, or DAD moments, to show some of the unforeseen things that could be stumbled upon in Mother Nature’s backyard. He details lessons learned, including a nerve-wracking tent/copperhead encounter that fortunately ended well for both Trigger and the snake! Although this book focuses on the older hiker, there are lots of tips and techniques that appeal to hikers and backpackers of all ages. All proceeds will be donated to charity.
