Carbon Block Filter is a better choice

Activated carbon is a form of carbon that has been processed to increase the porosity of the individual granules, resulting in a large surface area available for adsorption. Activated carbon is utilized in water filtration in two basic forms: Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) and carbon block. Both forms use carbon that has been ground into small particle sizes.

Filter Design

GAC filters have loose granules of carbon. To produce carbon blocks, the activated carbon particles are ground into “fine” mesh that is 7 to 19 times smaller than GAC. Therefore, carbon block filters are stronger than GAC filters and will not allow changes in water pressure to create channels where water can pass through unfiltered. Channeling effect occurs in GAC filters.

Filtration Efficiency

Carbon block filters remove more contaminants than GAC filters due to the larger surface area and uniform pore structure. Carbon blocks can remove chlorine more effectively, eliminate undesirable odors and reduce volatile organic chemicals and other chemical contaminants. Due to their loose column of carbon, GAC filters have lower contaminant removal ratio and less resistant to channeling.

Micron Rating

Carbon block filters are usually rated by the size of particles they are able to remove, measured in microns and generally ranged from 20 microns (least effective) down to 0.5 microns (most effective). Most 0.5 micron nominally rated carbon block filters are effective in cysts and asbestos reduction. GAC filters cannot be measured in micron pore size due to their granular state.

Overall Filtration

Because of its static composition, carbon block releases minimal carbon fines when first installed and have come in contact with water for the first time. The GAC filter, on the other hand, releases carbon fines to the first few gallons of water. Overall, carbon block is a better choice in water filtration system due to its high effectiveness in removing contaminants.
