A “gem” is a mineral that have been chosen for their visual beauty and durability, and are useful to create and be used as human adornments.However, this definition is not entirely accurate, as various exceptions do not fit into this classification. This is because it is true that many gems are minerals, but others derive from organic substances.

The term “geode” derives from the Greek word “γεώδης,” “gheṓdēs” which in turn derives from ghê “earth.” Its name, as is evident, is fully due to the place of formation of the geodes or the cavities made in the rocks present in the earth’s crust (so with thousand or million years of history!).

“Minerals” are hard substances that have formed naturally over the centuries. They have chemical and physical properties and a regular crystalline structure. Most of the rocks that exist in nature are made up of minerals, including precious stones and minerals.

The term “fossil” derives from the Latin “fodere,” which means to dig. In paleontology, this identifies the whole or partial remains of organisms that were once living. On a more general level, the term fossil indicates the remains of animals and plants, evidence of vital activities, and traces related to food.
